Stress is a ubiquitous feature of legal education, and the stress endured by law students can result in a significant deterioration in their well-being, including anxiety, panic attacks, depression, substance misuse, and increased suicide risk.  Developments in neuroscience and psychology research illuminate how cognition works in the brain and suggest a series of recommendations to enhance well-being, brain health, and mental strength.  This workshop covers the brain areas associated with memory formation, motivation, and reward; the impact of stress on cognition; the influence of self-medication on law student thinking; the importance that diet has on brain health; the significance of mental strength; and strategies for maintaining optimal cognitive function.  This workshop addresses the physical, emotional, and intellectual domains of well-being reference in the ABA Path to Lawyer Well-being Report.  Participants will explore their own well-being through a series of assessment (Stress, Mindset, Perfectionism, and Mindfulness) and reflections (Tracking and Changing Habits and Cognitive Fitness Action Plan).

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Label key parts of the thinking and emotional brains
